Use the marking as a starting point, then confirm the physical design and operating duty before approving a replacement.

Technical guide Updated 2026-07-16 For identification and RFQ preparation

Why the marking is not enough

A bearing designation can identify a family, but suffixes and manufacturer-specific references may change the seals, internal clearance, outer-ring profile, lubrication or mounting arrangement. Worn markings can also be incomplete. Treat the number on the old bearing as the first search clue rather than automatic proof of interchangeability.

1. Record every available identifier

Photograph the complete marking before cleaning or dismantling the part. Record prefixes, spaces, punctuation and suffixes exactly as shown. Also check the machine manual, previous purchase order, drawing and packaging. A second reference such as a machine maker number can be as useful as the bearing number.

2. Identify the basic construction

  • Determine whether the part is a radial bearing, yoke roller, stud cam follower, combined bearing, back-up roller or crossed roller bearing.
  • Note whether it mounts through a bore, threaded stud, smooth stud, flange, plate or integrated shaft.
  • Check whether the running surface is cylindrical, crowned, convex, concave or grooved.
  • Record visible seals, shields, lubrication holes, grease fittings, eccentric collars and locking hardware.

3. Measure the installation envelope

For an initial sourcing review, measure the bore or stud, outside diameter, outer-ring width and overall width. Stud followers may also require thread diameter, pitch, stud length, shoulder diameter and hex or slot details. Combined bearings and back-up rollers often require additional axial-roller or shaft-end dimensions. Use a controlled drawing for final approval whenever tolerances affect mounting or running accuracy.

4. Describe the operating duty

Provide the machine type, load direction, expected radial and axial loads, speed, shock, duty cycle, temperature, contamination and lubrication method. A dimensionally similar bearing may still be unsuitable if its internal design, load capacity, speed limit or sealing arrangement differs.

5. Compare the proposed replacement

Confirm the complete drawing and specification rather than comparing only d × D × B. Review mounting interfaces, abutments, fasteners, internal clearance or preload, outer-ring geometry, lubrication path and material requirements. For track-running bearings, the mating track hardness and alignment also influence service conditions.

What to send with an inquiry

  • Complete old bearing designation and suffix
  • Clear marking and overall product photos
  • Measured dimensions or a controlled drawing
  • Machine and application description
  • Load, speed, temperature and lubrication information
  • Quantity, annual demand, delivery destination and required date
